IT Inspired Cinnamon Sugar Fortune Cookies

Happy Halloween! Almost.

Halloween is just around the corner and I know a lot of people are looking for some spooky treats to enjoy by themselves or with friends! While this isn’t exactly a recreation, nor from a 2D media source, I thought I would try my hand at a recipe inspired by one of my favorite horror films, IT.

In the iconic restaurant scene in It Chapter 2, we see the main characters receive a plate of fortune cookies upon finishing their dinner together. This had been the first time any of them had seen each other in 27 years, though Stanley couldn’t make it. Upon opening each cookie, they all get one word that, when put together, spells out “Guess Stanley Could Not Cut It”. It’s the friend’s first reintroduction to Pennywise’s work of fear and manipulation and it sets the tone for the whole film. I included the scene below because even if you haven’t seen the film or have no intentions to it’s one of the best scenes in the movie

I found this Cinnamon Sugar Fortune Cookie recipe on Mantitlement and decided to alter it a bit in order to not waste ingredients and make the recipe fit our needs!

Recipe:

**Cut in half since we only need 6 for this, but feel free to make 12 if you have a larger gathering or want more!)

INGREDIENTS

6 Street Taco sized flour tortillas

½ (4 tbs) stick of butter

½ cup sugar mixed with 1 ½ tablespoons ground cinnamon

Note: I found I threw out a lot of this mixture so I would make about half of this and then make more as needed!

Toothpicks

Canola or vegetable oil for frying

How to Fold the Tortillas:

I know it looks pretty tricky at first, but you’ll get the hang of it!

Step 1: Fold the tortilla in half lightly

Step 2: Using the tip of your finger, lightly push the tortilla where it's folded.

Step 3: Bring the two ends together and secure the shape with a toothpick!

Steps

1) Fill a somewhat large pot with oil only halfway or a third full. You’ll want enough oil to submerge the tortillas but don’t fill the pot more than halfway full. Heat over medium heat until the oil reached 350 degrees.

**Note: If you don’t have a thermometer for the oil, stick a wooden spoon or even a toothpick into the oil and if small bubbles start to form around the wooden object, your oil is ready to go! Just make sure the bubbles aren’t too intense!

2) Fold the 6 tortillas as I demonstrate above and secure the ends together with a toothpick! This will ensure the cookie’s shape doesn’t alter once it hits the oil.

3) Once the oil has come to temperature, carefully add 2 or 3 tortillas to the oil, or you could do them one at a time it’ll just take a bit longer. Fry the tortillas, turning over at least once during cooking, until golden brown on both sides about 3-4 minutes. I have found that closer to 3 minutes is best.

4) Using metal tongs, lift the tortilla from the oil and drain the oil out from the inside. Don’t forget this step or you’ll have soggy fortune cookies! Place the fried tortillas on a plate lined with paper towels.

5) Once the tortillas have cooled down completely, you can gently remove the toothpicks

6) Once all the tortillas are fried, melt the butter and brush on the tops of the tortillas, then coat generously with the cinnamon and sugar mixture. I have found that holding the cookie and sprinkling the cinnamon-sugar mixture on top allows for a more even coating as opposed to just dunking the cookie in the mixture.

**Note: You can make the fortune cookies ahead of time and just add the butter and cinnamon sugar mixture when you’re ready to serve them, however, I have found these are best when they’re made hot and ready!
