Nothing says Fall comfort food like a homemade from scratch apple pie! One of my all-time favorite cartoons is Adventure Time. Adventure Time follows Finn the human and Jake the dog on all their silly adventures around the Land of Ooo, Candy Kingdom, and other wacky places!
One of the characters we meet in the show is Tree Trunks. She’s an adorable old elephant that speaks softly with a heavy southern accent. Tree Trunks has a passion for baking and tasty treats such as hot buns and other pastries and is often seen either carrying or baking something sweet. Though she has a passion for all things sweet, she is most famous for her apple pie. Living in an apple orchard, she is able to perfect her delicious apple pie.
For this recreation, I opted to follow a video as opposed to a recipe in text format. There is no reason for this other than I wanted to ensure I made the best pie possible. The video is posted by Natasha’s Kitchen and is titled The Only Apple Pie Recipe You’ll Need and I hope she’s right! This pie was not the easiest to make, however, with video instructions it was easy to follow! The baker in this video decided to make her own crust which you can totally do as well, but I decided to just use Pillsbury’s pie crust that comes in a box since I am, by nature, very lazy.
Ingredients:
· 1 box of Pillsbury’s pie crust (comes in a pack of 2)
· 6-7 Granny Smith Apples, peeled, cored (2 1/4 lbs, or 7 cups thinly sliced)
· 1 1/2 tsp cinnamon
· 8 Tbsp unsalted butter (1 stick)
· 3 Tbsp all-purpose flour
· 1/4 cup water
· 1 cup granulated sugar
Cookware:
· Glass pie pan (9 in.)
· Mixing bowl
· Medium saucepan
· Melon baller (not necessary but does help with coring apples!)
· Whisk
· Knife
· Cutting board
· Apple peeler (you can use a knife too it just takes a long time)
Steps:
· Preheat the oven to 425 degrees
· Melt butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Then, whisk in 3 Tbsp flour and let simmer for 1 minute, whisking constantly.
· Whisk in 1/4 cup water, 1 cup sugar, and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and continue simmering for 3 minutes, whisking frequently then remove from heat.
· This makes a special sauce that makes the pie taste absolutely divine.
· Peel, remove cores with a melon baller and thinly slice 7 cups of apples (5-7 apples total), and place them in a large bowl. Sprinkle the top with 1 1/2 tsp cinnamon and toss to combine.
· Pour the sauce over the apples and stir to coat the apple slices.
· Stir for about 5 minutes! Make sure they’re thoroughly coated!
· Pour the mixture into your pie tin that is lined with pie crust. Then cover the pie with another pie crust and slit holes in the top mimicking the slits in Tree Trunk’s famous apple pie.
· Bake at 425˚F for 15 minutes. Reduce the heat to 350˚F and continue baking another 45 minutes or until apples are soft and filling is bubbling through the vents. Rest at room temp 1 hour before serving.
I recommend this pie recipe for any Fall get together or outing! It is the perfect mix between sweet and savory. I wouldn’t recommend starting this project an hour before you have to leave, but the extra time spent on this dessert is a thousand percent worth it.
